Hello.

I am on triple DMARD therapy and wondered if taking NSAIDS like Naproxen, ibuprofen etc are fine to take daily..?

I read on the leaflets that you shouldn't take them with DMARDS like MTX?

Struggling with swollen feet/tender ankles at the moment whilst I wait for triple DMARDs to work..

Hate taking all these tablets..

Hi Darshin,

I think you would be better asking your doctor this.
I can't take NSAIDs at all but I'm pretty sure they are sometimes prescribed alongside mtx, but best to check.
Sorry to hear how much you are suffering and I hope things improve for you soon.

Hello darshin
I'm not on triple therapy only mtx, but for a good six months from the start of my treatment I was taking the full dose of diclofenac daily. I was also alarmed when I read in the beginning in the leaflets about not taking both. However, by regular monitoring of your blood the doctor who prescribed your medication will be looking for any adverse effects when these are taken together. I think I read previously that you went to a private consultant so you are nowprobably also being monitored by your GP, one or both of these should be able to confirm whether you personally should be able to take the NSAIDs along with the DMARDs. Sympathies with the sore feet and I hope the drugs start working for you soon.

Hello Darshinin.

I have taken nsaids with methotrexate, and was ok, but try not to if possible as I don't like to take any more drugs if I can avoid it. I started on mtx a year ago- at the time I was also on meloxicam but my rheummy told me to wean myself of them gradually. I now only take one when absolutely necessary.

Hi Darshin
I asked my Rheumy Doc that last week as the pharmacist had given me a lecture about not taking NSAIDs and DMARDs together when I picked up my last prescription for both. She said that ideally you wouldn't want to take them together, and that's what the strict interpretation would be. However, with RA you don't have much option but the blood monitoring will pick up if this is causing problems. She advised me to try to minimise NSAID use as much as I can, and just be sensible about only taking them when I need to. Polly

I wonder if you can tolerate cocodamol 500/30? I have found them great to take with MTX and Hydroxy and they really do help with the pain.

Enjoy the weekend x

Hi Darshin

I have taken celecoxib, diclofenac and also indocid R at the same time as other DMARDS.

It does say when having DMARDs you should be on pain relief- but for NSAIDs you need to speak to a dr as there are medical restrictions on nsaids.

with kind support

Hi there, I took Naproxyn for over a year with methotrexate and it worked a treat. Unfortunately go blood pressure problems later so had to come off them. Definitely discuss with your doctor. I had to try a couple beofre I found one that suited me.

Good luck.

I think they contra-indicate and they can affect your stomach so a good pain relief may be more beneficial?

Co-codamol (the higher dose), as Jean recommends, is handy.

Thanks everyone for the time to respond to this topic.

I have never generally taken full daily doses of any NSAIDs on pain-killers. However recently I noted that taking a bed-time dose of Naproxen was helping me make a better start in the morning i.e reduced stiffness in hands, shoulders and reduce my ankle swells.

Also as Jean has suggested co-codamol, My mum-in-law had some lying around and I tried this and would say it is better than just paracetamol.

I intend to see my GP shortly so will discuss this all with him.

As stated don't wish to take more tablets than necessary..but I think I am getting much looser with my will-power what with taking so many DMARDS.

Hi Darshin,
Just catching up with this one. Started on MTX in November along with full dose of paracetamol and diclofenac. Changed from diclofenac to naprosyn about a month ago and boy what a difference in the nausea and headaches. I think they all contra indicate but its a case of risk versus benefit. I certainly miss them if I neglect to take a dose. Know what you mean about the will power, there are days when you'd take anything wouldn't you?!
Take care
Sara

Hi

Funny enough Im going to raise this next week with my Rhuemy nurse, as my husband read an article that long term use of NSAIDS for Arthritis sufferer's is not good, I'm going to take the paper clipping to my appointment on the 4th, will let you know what my Nurse says.

It's very confusing at times isn't it Confused

I've been taking 250mg of Naproxen daily since was put on MTX in November (at that point it was actually 500mg) and they added SLZ in March. The Hospital are aware of this although I get them from my GP. My understanding is that Naproxen is OK but not Ibroprofen, but it does seem to vary who you speak to. I'm also still having to take Prednisalone which the Consultant would like me to stop but every time I try my knee swells up.

Hi Darshin

Just want to say that taking pills is something we all hate BUT if they help - take 'em. No medals on here for martyrs, as our Jenni has said to me many times! Hope your GP helps.
